We are all sooooo sore (except Savannah who isn't sore at all, and Thomas and Rhea who have recovered by now!) after hiking for five hours a few days ago with our dear friends AJ, Charmhee, Toby and Bryce.  This was a new section of the Wall that we haven't been to before.  We started at a wild section (Dazhuangke) and ended at Huanghua Lakeside Great Wall.  This was probably the last time to hike with them because they are leaving post in June.  We are so sad to be saying goodbye to them!  We've had so many adventures with them here and around China, in particular our trip last summer in Southern China, not to mention the regular daily interactions of friends.  They're so easy to travel with.  Charmhee speaks Mandarin so well and is so organized with arranging everything like itineraries, transportation, restaurants, etc.  And she is so kind and thoughtful!

The Saturday that started spring break was a work day for the Chinese, so it's a perfect day for being a tourist and going to public places like the Wall.  We had the whole thing to ourselves with our friends the Jays.  We have explored other parts of the wall with them, with AJ as our "tour guide," usually in his bright neon orange shirt that you can't lose track of.  AJ is almost 60 years old and he is hard to keep up with!  He's in amazing shape.  He always wants to start hiking early in the day and can go, go, go while the rest of us are exhausted!  He definitely keeps us going when we feel tired, unmotivated, or discouraged by the length or difficulty of the hike!  When they invited us to go again, for one last trip to the Wall with them before they left Beijing, we had to go!

And the adventure started with the driver dropping us off by the road where we climbed up from there to barbed wire.  We got through the wire, and there our adventure began!  Our 5 hour adventure of shaking calves and thighs as we went up and down mountains, stairs, through guard towers, darting through beehives, checking out the spring blossoms, etc. was exhausting, we're glad we did it.  Only with the Jays would we take on such a long and difficult hike!  Trying to keep up with them was a challenge, and came with some gripes from the kids, but they did it and we were proud that they pushed through to the end! The stairs kept going and going, thus causing shaky calves and thighs!Charmee has been an awesome friend the last two years!  She was one of the first people to reach out at Kingstone to introduce herself and offer to answer questions.  She invited me over for "tea" at her apartment where I was able to visit and ask her about her ayi, where she goes grocery shopping, etc. I'll never forget her kindness.  She also, on the first time meeting her, gave me a pair of pants that I'm actually wearing right now!  She said they were too small but she couldn't return them to Old Navy since they went on OD adn the package arrived after they left.  It had been sitting there for 6 months, so it had been too long since she ordered the pants.  That was the beginning of our clothes sharing.  Many more times after that, we shared clothess that arrived from PinDuoDuo too small or too large and it would end up fitting one of us.  When she left Beijing, she gave me a whole closet full of hand-me-downs  She also frequently stopped by with yummy salads and different Korean foods to try.  We both shared a love for sweet potatoes, mangoes, organic strawberries, Korean clothing (really all Korean products), hairwashing (at a place called Armady), hiking at the Wall, sightseeing around China, and our kids.  Her twin boy and girl, Bryce and Toby, were adorable.  Rhea loved hanging out with Toby, and got along great on our trips.  Such a good family, optimistic about life in Beijing despite the challenges, and always ready for an adventure! We hit an area where we could walk around or go down a steep, unrestored portion of the wall, and Charmhee, Bri, me, and Savvy chose to go around.  The crazy kids and AJ went down the really steep part.  Amazingly, all made it to the bottom without injury! We got to hike to 4 or 5 guard towers before getting to a restored section of the wall with a wonderful view of a lake.  We reached an area with a magnetic slide that we chose to take up to the top and then we walked down.  AJ, Thomas, and Briant walked up from the slide to the wall first where AJ was approached by a 4 year old boy that asked him where he was from.  When he answered "The United States," the child responded, "China should attack the United States.  The United States is evil."  When AJ relayed what the child had just said, we were all in shock for a few minutes, realizing that the child would only say such a thing if a parent or teacher had said it.  Shocking.  Sadly, I'm afraid that things like this are probably said and thought more than we know in homes and schools here.I had to get a picture of this "forthcoming" sign after Savannah told me last week that when the principal of the school found out our kids were transferring to a different school next year, a mentioned that I was "forthcoming."  Savvy said that he struggled to find "the right word" to describe me (for some reason I was brought into the conversation), and then he said slowly, "forthcoming."  Hard to believe after a good laugh (he was referring to me as forthcoming because I suggested they use a digital sign up program for parent teacher conferences instead of making the parents email each teacher), that we happened to run into this sign.  Not only is the translation funny, but the recent conversation with this word made us laugh!
The wall goes down into the lake water and then rises up out of the other side.  Beautiful. We had a wonderful, exhausting day!  Yet again, we got to hike on the wall with minimal pollution, blue skies and perfect weather in good company!  So grateful for Charmhee and AJ and the fun memories we've made with them before they move to Jordan!

Spring break

Looking back at all of these pictures, I'm reminded of what a fun spring break we had!  We were stuck in Beijing because of the 14 day rule which is that the kids can't go back to school for 14 days if they've been outside of Beijing.  So to save the kids from missing school for two weeks, we had to play in Beijing instead of traveling elsewhere.  That's how it's been for almost the last two years we've lived here.  We had the restrictions, but we're glad to have friends that we could enjoy some fun with.  It started with our hike to Lakeside Wall with the Jays (see previous post), and continued with enjoying nice weather, walks to see the spring flowers at Chaoyang Park, a tour at the Forbidden City with the Rowe family from church), we got in-home massages for our first time, went to Happy Valley Amusement park for our first time as a family, went to see The Golden Mask and out for Peking Duck with the Jays and Chus, and watched General Conference.  And some nice relaxing at home.

Lots of cuddles with Cocoa
The Forbidden City tour with an English speaking guide
Matt and Kimmy Rowe and their adorable family joined us for the tour.
Parents like to dress their kids up in traditional clothing and take them to important tourist sites.  I had to get a few pictures with and of them.
We had to go through three checkpoints where we had to show passports over and over.  As foreigners, we have to deal with that everywhere we go while the locals show their local ID once and they're good to go.  We feel picked on, and there's nothing we can do!

Massages at home with Sam and Amy!  Our first time having them.  I think we all fell asleep during the massage!  It's nice to live in a place where this sort of thing is cheap!
Happy Valley Amusement park!

We ran into Janna Taylor and her family as we walked in, so we got to hang out!  She and I kept each other company, with our motion sensitivities, by chatting while the others were on rides.

We left a little early to go see a show called The Golden Mask Dynasty show that was right next to Happy Valley.  We met Charmhee and AJ there with their family, and the Daniel and Katy Chu and their family as well!  It was quite the production with amazing costumes and sets, especially with the whole stage turning into a waterfall!

And of course we had to go out for good Chinese food after.  We went to a fancier restaurant where we could get Peking Duck and other authentic Chinese food.

These cute little ducks were to hold our chopsticks.  So cute, I had to go home and find them on Taobao to order them for ourselves.  ;)
Haha, we were given some little shoes from another dog owner, Ray who's Momo's owner.  They don't fit Momo anymore, so they passed them on.  But Cocoa didn't like them, so this is the one and only time she wore them.
Savannah spent some time sewing over the break, and wanted to try and make a prom dress with this fabric.  The beginning stages of her trying to figure it out.  Ccoa really liked the fabric whenever she would lay it out on the floor, and wouldn't get off.  ;)

We spent some time enjoying the flowers at Chaoyang Park.  They really do know how to beautify the grounds with color and variety!
The week ended with us getting to watch General Conference!  We love General Conference and I think even more, the kids love the General Conference store.  ;)  The kids start with a few Conference Bucks that I give them to buy snacks for the first session, and then every session after that, they earn more bucks to spend, by answering two questions after each session.  A fun way to help them pay attention and even take notes.
We love hearing from our leaders twice a year!  What would we do without their prophetic counsel and guidance to get through the struggles of our day, and having the spirit speak to our souls as to what we should work on for the next six months.  I'm so grateful to have the Restored gospel in my life to know I have a Savior who lived and died for me and that through His grace, I can be strengthened every day and made better than I was the day before.  The gospel helps me know why I'm here and where I'm going when I die, and through that knowledge, I can help my family know the same and work toward having their own relationship with the Savior and our Heavenly Father.
We celebrated Cocoa's 2nd birthday!  However, after this, we decided to celebrate it on dad's birthday, April 26th.
Cocoa fell asleep on Thomas - could NOT be cuter!!

Thomas and Savannah were getting rid of clothes, so Rhea was happy to receive them!

Savannah joined the embassy CPR class they offered and she got certified!  She wants to be a nurse some day, so this was exciting prep for her!
