President's Day--no school, so we wanted to get out. No rain either, so Bri and I took the girls into D.C. to the Library of Congress. Savannah has been wanting to go with her love of books and reading. She couldn't imagine a library the had "it all." Luckily museums on the Mall were open on the Federal holiday. Thomas unfortunately had homework and is trying to stay off of his feet and heal from his bone bruising and edema he was recently diagnosed with. They cause him a lot of pain! The reading room. We got so lucky because normally it's closed to the public but was open for President's day, so we got to go in!
Of course the girls didn't know what a card catalog was! So it was fun to tour the old system and show them what we used to have to do to find a book or write a research paper. Oh the hours and hours...
We were impressed with the beauty and attention to detail on the inside architecture and decor as well throughout the library.
Besides beautiful architecture, we saw display cases and collection rooms. Here is a wooden Christ figurine found in the Dominican Republic. 16th century.
Mayan vessels found at archaeological sights in Mexico, Yucatan, and Guatemala.
And I guess this was the first map made with the word "America" on it!

These are just a few of the many Bibles in their special collections of more than 1500 bibles in 150 languages spanning the 15th-21st centuries. These Bibles are in Hewbrew, Slovic, and Arabic.

And we made a quick stop to check out the outside of the Supreme Court that was just a few blocks away. Across the street was the capitol. We had a striking, blue sky follow us that day. It was a much needed gift after weeks of depressing gray! We stopped and got a pretzel and hotdog from a food truck before we caught the metro home. It was a fun day with the girls!
