On Saturday morning, Bri went with me to walk around Chaoyang Park. Of course the park did not disappoint. It was beautiful and full of interesting people, including the kite flyer. This man was flying his kite, that looked like a real eagle, and the more we watched, it appeared that he was actually flying his kite to the rhythm of the music ending with the kite gliding barely above the ground and into his hands on the final note. Truly impressive.
We had to talk to him about his kite flying, so we walked over to him and his friend and noticed that the kite looked handmade. He confirmed that it was, and that he actually made it himself.
He was a little camera shy, so he insisted that WE take a picture with his kite instead of him, so we did (in basically my Saturday lounge clothes!), but then he finally amused us and we got him. I had to capture the whole "piloting" outfit he was wearing.
He showed us the back of the kite as well to show how it was held together. Then he started taking it apart.
The string wheel was amazing. We've never seen anything like it. It seemed a lot easier to reel the string in and out, but maybe that was just because he's so good at it.
And the tail had the words of a song that he had written on in Mandarin.
It was wonderful to have the chance to watch this man fly his kite and then get to meet him. He truly loves his hobby. We hope to see him fly his kites many more times while we're here!
