"Little House on the Prairie" has made it into our prayers!

A few weeks ago, we finished reading the "Little Town on the Prairie", the 7th book in the "Little House" series by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  It was the only one available in our local library here, so even though we had not read the others, I was anxious to start reading one of the books. I grew up, along with Briant, watching the t.v. series of "Little House on the Prairie," but I had never read the books. The kids liked the book and continued talking about it and asking questions.  After many nostalgic conversations between Briant and I about our fond memories with the t.v. series, we decided to buy the 9 season DVD collection with the money he made from selling his Justice Iredell bobble head!  Side note, Briant and I take every opportunity to “bring our children up in the 80’s.”  They got a retro Atari system for Christmas last year, they have watched many episodes of Tom and Jerry, Bugs Bunny, and Casper, they think Kool and the Gang and Johnny Cash are current popular musicians, and they know the early Disney shows (all on VHS tapes played in a VCR) better than we do (I’m talking to you Herbie the Lovebug!).  All of which, their friends have no knowledge.  :)  Oh, and they asked Santa for roller skates last year after skating in a rink with other homeschooling families on Halloween.  We had to return to the skating rink many times, including Savvy's 8th birthday because they love skating to the music--just as Briant and I did.  And what are they still playing there?  Kool and the Gang.  :)

To our great satisfaction, our kids have been glued to every episode and beg to watch it every day!  And of course after each episode, they ask to watch another one.  And the excitement and anticipation isn't just with the children.  The first weekday that we had it, the kids watched a few episodes during the day while briant was at work and I was on the phone making dental appointments and talking with insurance companies to get our car and belongings insured abroad.  When Bri called on his way home and I told him that the kids were watching a few episodes, he said with much disappointment, “But I wanted to watch them too!”

After we got our zillion vaccine shots on Thursday, the nurse warned us that we would probably have headaches, fevers, and feel very lethargic.  So we asked the kids what they wanted to do to relax, and the first thing out of all three of their mouths, practically in unison, was to watch "Little House on the Prairie!"  Then today, as a family, we just watched the episode in the first season called “The Raccoon” where Laura’s life was thought to be threatened by a bite from her pet raccoon that they thought went rabid.  Turns out that everything was fine, of course, and Laura continues to live throughout the next 8 seasons.  However, Rhea said the family prayer before bed and made sure to ask heavenly father to bless Laura that she wouldn’t die from the rabies.  Luckily, the kids felt much better about the discomfort they experienced from getting their recent rabies shot after this episode!  This wonderful family series, packed with life’s lessons and a strong moral code, has made it into the growing hearts of our children as it did ours.  They've even asked if they can call us "Ma" and "Pa."  And of course all of them want to be called "Half-pint" like Charles calls Laura.  :)
